Outward Raises $5 Million For Immersive Visual Merchandising Platform

Originally published January 11, 2017 · Virtual Reality Reports

In January 2017, San Jose-based Outward Inc. announced a $5 million raise for its immersive visual merchandising platform — technology that let retailers create photorealistic 3D, AR and VR renderings of products and room scenes instead of traditional photography.

Outward's 3D capture and rendering pipeline was adopted in the home furnishings industry, where staging endless product combinations physically is impractical. The story was covered internationally as an example of VR and 3D visualization finding real commercial applications beyond gaming and entertainment.

The bet proved right: Outward was later acquired by Williams-Sonoma, and immersive product visualization is now standard across major retail. It remains one of the clearest early examples of VR-adjacent technology generating measurable business value.
